Man gets 18 years for raping daughter

CHITWAN, Jan 21: The Makawanpur district court on Monday sentenced a man to 18 years in jail for raping his own daughter.
Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar convicted Shukra Raj Meghi, a resident of Bhainse VDC in Makwanpur, for raping his minor daughter. The 38-year-old was arrested by police on February 1, 2012. The police had filed a rape case against him at the district court on February 26.
In her preliminary statement to the police, the girl had disclosed that Meghi raped her in the night by threatening to kill her with a sharp sickle if she protested. The victim had also said that Meghi thrashed her mother when she tried to protect her daughter.
According to Kaushal Gyawali, chief administrator of the district court, Meghi has also been slapped with a fine of Rs 200,000. The amount of fine will be spent for the victim´s education, said Gyawali.
In the course of the trial, the victim had changed her statement. She had maintained that she was not raped by her father and she charged him for rape only because he physically abused her mother.
But, the court on the basis of a medical report and other circumstantial evidence ruled that Meghi raped his daughter, according to Gyawali.
