Col Lama granted bail

KATHMANDU, MAR 02 -

Nepalese Army Colonel Kumar Lama who was held in the UK in January on torture charges has been granted bail .

Colonel Lama, 46, is in the custody of the British police since January 3 on two counts of torture he allegedly committed during the Maoist insurgency in Nepal. The Scotland Yard alleged him for ‘intentionally inflicting severe pain or suffering’ to Janak Bahadur Raut at the custody from April 15-May 1, 2005 and to Karam Hussain from April 15 - October 31, 2005 at Gorusinghe Army Barracks basedin Kapilvastu.

A judge at Chelmsford Crown Court has now freed him on £10,000 bail .

Col Lama is expected to be freed within three days after posting the bail amount and other legal procedure, Nepal'sAmbassador for UK, Dr. Suresh Chandra Chalise said.

The next court hearing in the case is due to take place in June.
